You are bidding on glass double matted photograph in mahogany frame with a gilt line in middle of wood (14-1/2" x 12") of Finnish composer, YRJO KILPINEN (1892-1959). This beautiful black and white photograph is 6-1/2" x 9."
Reverse side bears dedication to "Dr. Henry P. (Purport) Eames (1872-1950) with best wishes and heartly greetings yours, (signed) Yrjo Kilpinen, Dec. 15, 1950."
Rames attended Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa and received a batchelor of Law from Northwestern University in 1892. He practiced law in Chicago for months before deciding to pursue a career in music. A student of music at the age of 12, Eames began touring and continuing his musical studies both nationally and abroad. He worked as a pianist and composer, studying with Clara Schumann and Paderewski and wrote for musical journals. He became director of the piano department and lecturer on theory at the University School of Music.
YRJO KILPINEN was born in Helsinki, Finland.  In 1910 he moved to Vienna to continue his studies and from 1913-1914 he studied in Berlin. He became an honorary professor in 1942 and was elected to the Finish Academy in 1948.
Kilpinen is most famous for composing 790 works in the lieder style. He also wrote 6 piano sonatas, a violin sonata and a cello sonata.
As a lied composer he should be considered as one of the most remarkable names of the 20th century. His friendship with the German national-socialistic leaders brought him a bad name after the war, after which he was more or less a "persona non grata" in Finland. It is no wonder that during the 1930's and 1940's he was internationally the most well known Finnish composer after Jean Sibelius.
In 1999 the North American Kilpinen Society came into existence and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign holds the collection of his music, scores, letters and journal articles.
The photograph is very heavy as both sides are heavier glassed.
