Jefferson came from a theatrical family in Philadelphia and had his first onstage appearances as a child. In 1859, he made a dramatic version of Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle based on some older plays. An instant success, within six years Rip Van Winkle became Jefferson's signature role and finally his only role, which he even played in a series of short films produced in 1896. "He was Rip and Rip was he." Francis Wilson, Joseph Jefferson: Reminiscences of a Fellow Player (New York: C. Scribner's Sons., 1906), p. 136.
