    CONDITION
Handmade vintage (mid-1980's) rustic chic Pagan Americana folk artwork that was wildcrafted by harvesting and weaving local natural fiber sources to create the “Greenwood Star.” The artwork was held in a private collection and cared for by multiple generations of the same family for over thirty years. The pentacle was originally crafted by a young, but very skilled, artist in the mid-1980's and given as a gift to a family member. Over the years, the physical condition of the artwork was preserved by controlling environmental factors (e.g. exposure to UV light, humidity, and temperature) that are known to cause degradation.
The “Greenwood Star” is exemplar of primitive artwork found within the Bohemian styles (e.g. Boho chic, rustic chic, and shabby chic) and its sylvan appearance lends itself to a cottage or country farmhouse style. Some of the faux floral elements, such as the large red rose, are tattered and threadbare. Dilapidated components were purposefully included during the original creation of the artwork and are considered to be critical features. Overall, the current condition of the piece is excellent.
    OVERVIEW
As stated, this is a vintage (i.e. mid-1980's) handmade pentacle with a diameter of approximately 13 to 13½ inches and handwoven using wild fibers (i.e. vines) and a variety of older vintage materials (i.e. 1960's and 1970's), such as ribbons and lace, that were carefully selected for the artistic creation of this item. As this is a handmade item, there is a slight variance in the diameter of the pentacle of approximately a half inch depending on the exact location of measurement. The pentacle has some mild flexibility that is similar to that of a basket, or any other woven item, and therefore minor adjustments in the shape can be made if needed to provide a more evenly rounded appearance if desired.
Due to age, some of the items such as the baby's breath flowers have deteriorated and the fabric of the synthetic flowers is fraying. The rose is very visibly frayed and shows significant signs of aging. This item was created to be rustic chic and therefore the deterioration is consistent with the artistic style of the piece. Notably, some of the degeneration is organic and the result of the continued aging of some elements that were considered shabby when the piece was created over thirty years ago.
The pentacle is a symbol that has existed within the human experience and was present throughout a myriad of different cultures and times. Pentacles have been used for purposes that have ranged from the mundane to the cryptic, and its meaning has extended out to become associated with folklore, magic, philosophy, religion, and superstitions. In theory, this pentacle could be interpreted as a symbol of protection and the various floral items are affiliated with folklore associated with love, peace, courage, and remembrance. If you are seeking an amulet for good luck or protection, please keep in mind that individual interpretations will vary and that this pentacle is presented only as artwork.
Due to the ambiguous nature associated with any item that features such a highly recognizable symbol that is often featured in popular culture and believed to have various mystical associations, it is strongly emphasized that this pentacle is intended to function solely as beautiful handcrafted artwork. This pentacle is presented as a work of unrefined beauty that can be compared to the simple joy of eating warm homemade apple pie with freshly whipped cream. Simple pleasures such as these are meant to be enjoyed! Of course, how an object is actually used in daily practice is entirely up to the Buyer's discretion.
This pentacle was made during the mid-1980's and is being sold by the original artist. The pentacle was never been actively used for any religious or magical rituals. It was used as a house decoration and country folk charm.
    COMPOSITION
Locally harvested natural fibers from sustainable resources and upcycled vintage sewing notions and embellishments including lace, ribbons, and fabric strips. All of the natural components used to create this item were obtained by harvesting the natural fibers from local woodland areas and neighborhood residential backyard spaces. The synthetic elements were discovered in a storage room within a pile of forgotten boxes filled with various bits and bobs from abandoned sewing projects and misplaced crafting supplies. With permission granted, the trove of crafting supplies was pillaged and a few items were selected to be entwined as colorful adornments and faceted with floral features.
The pentacle was originally woven during the mid-1980's by harvesting fiber sources predominantly comprised of wild yam vines (i.e. air potato vines) that were augmented with other various vines growing in the area (e.g. flame vines, trumpet vines, Virginia creeper vines, and wild grape vines). The pentacle was then left to dry for about two months and then embellished using vintage heirloom materials from the 1960's and 1970's that included white lace edge trim, burgundy ribbon, strips of cream colored fabric with a tiny burgundy floral print, old dried flowers sprigs, and assorted faux flowers. Most notably, the dried sprigs of Baby's Breath flowers were taken from an an old bridal bouquet that had been caught in the traditional manner during the tossing ritual.
The following is a list of all of the different types of fibers, mostly vines, that were harvested from the wild and used to weave the pentacle. The majority of the vines used were wild yam vines which known more commonly as air potato vines.
