    Description

Extraordinary 7" x 9" original Gerschel of Paris photograph of the legendary bass as Boris Godunov. Matte and reverse blind stamped, c. 1908.
Serge Diaghilev in 1907, prior to forming his Ballets Russe, ran a concert of Russian opera arias at the Opera de Paris. It was such a resounding success that he brought the Russian mega-star bass Feodor Chaliapin to Paris in 1908 to sing the title role of "Boris Godunov" in a fully staged performance. It was at this time Chaliapin found Charles Gerschel, one of the most artistic photographers in Paris at the time to take pictures both in an out of costume. Eventually, Diaghilev made Gerschel the official Parisian photographer of the Ballets Russe.
