    Description

    Here we have an
    Antique GEO. E. GAY 1878 Patented Ratcheting Cabinet Screwdriver, 16-3/4"L.
    George E. Gay of Augusta, ME was granted Patent No. 210,942 on Dec. 17, 1878 was for an improvement in ratcheting screwdrivers. This example is identified on the nickel-plated faceplate.  It is also marked on the rear with an embossing in the wood of a large oval " Geo. E Gay Augusta, ME" but the upper portion is worn away. The ratchet control is via a sliding button on the faceplate with Left, Lock, Right positions.  It is in full working condition. The screwdriver is in Good, working 'used tool' condition with wear to the finishes and a crack in the top of the wood handle.  There is some loss to the nickel-plating on the faceplate.  The steel shaft is 9-3/4" long with a very good 3/8" wide flat tip. Overall tool is 16-3/4" long.
