In France in the 1880s to 1922 brewers sold beer, lemonade and sodas in roll-on bottles made in England. The reason for stopping the use of this bottle is that it was not easily washable. It was banned in France in 1922 because this type of very thick glass bottle was used by anarchists for the manufacture of homemade bombs.
